Job: Postdoctoral fellowship in History and Theory of Architecture. ETH Zurich

ERC-funded project ‘Women Writing Architecture’

Applications are invited for a three-year postdoctoral fellowship within the ERC-funded project ‘Women Writing Architecture: Female Experiences of the Built 1700-1900’ (WoWA), led by Dr Anne Hultzsch. The project examines how women perceived and described architecture and the city in the 18th and 19th centuries in Europe and Latin America. Find out more about the project and the research group under www.hultzsch.arch.ethz.ch.
The postdoctoral fellow will work closely with the PI and the PhD fellow on the project, contribute to organising events and joint publications as well as building the project database, the WoWA Atlas, besides working on his/her own individual project focusing on the Latin American context. According to the candidate’s individual research specialism and interests, she/he will survey and analyse samples of women’s writing, choosing several centres for the macro investigation and then focusing on a small number of case studies to explore questions such as: how did women document the effects of urban expansion and transformation on the public as well as the private realms in South American cities during the period? Did their writing do more than reflect on such changes, i.e. did they wield any influence over architectural developments, however indirect? What was the effect of independence on the role women played in the public sphere and within the built environment?
Candidates will be supported with preparing and presenting papers at international conferences as well as publish their research in peer reviewed journals. The project grant will support conference attendance and an extended stay at a relevant archive in Latin America.
The project is seeking researchers with a background in the history of architecture, art, or related fields with research experience within Latin America. Suitable candidates hold a PhD in a relevant subject and have begun to publish independently. The project is particularly keen on hearing from candidates with experience in archival research within Latin America who have excellent written and spoken communication skills (English and Spanish) alongside an enthusiasm for meticulous research, close reading and feminist history.
