Adaptive Reuse. A theoretical glossary

“Adaptive Reuse. A theoretical glossary and an experimental lab” is an incoming book, including essays on the topic of the “adaptive reuse” from worldwide academics, and selected projects from “Reuse the ruin” summer workshops, to be published on 2024. The editorial board currently welcomes proposals from University Professors, Researchers, Ph.D. candidates, and any other scholar affiliated with an institution or a cultural organization.

Adaptive reuse in architecture is a sustainable design strategy that involves repurposing existing buildings for new functions, while retaining their historical, cultural, or architectural significance. This strategy promotes the conservation of resources, reduction of waste, and preservation of cultural heritage. The approach of the adaptive reuse involves many topics, such as the problem of the architecture language, the coexistence of two different styles, and the critical dialogue to be established between two different historical periods.

The editors are delighted to extend an invitation to scholars interested in contributing a short essay on the topic of Adaptive Reuse in Architecture. Selected submissions will be included as entries in a “glossary” featured within a pioneering book that aims to explore diverse theoretical approaches. This unique opportunity calls for submissions centered around a singular word/concept intricately linked to the profound realm of adaptive reuse (examples: “reversibility”, “monumentality”, “intelligibility”, etcc…) . Once selected, scholars are challenged to distill the essence of their chosen word into a concise and impactful text, fostering creativity and critical thinking. Submissions for the candidatures should focus on a specific word or concept related to adaptive reuse and a short description of the reasons to be developed later in the essay, included in a book with an assigned ISBN. After being selected, the submitted essay must be between 5000 and 8000 characters. The book will feature contributions from distinguished architects and professors, including renowned names such as Souto De Moura. We are excited to welcome diverse perspectives, enriching the book’s “glossary” with insightful contributions.
