Palladianism crossed the globe to become an international phenomenon. In an age before mass media, new ideas could only thrive through travel and grand tours and spread through word of mouth and, crucially, patronage. In the UK and elsewhere, Palladio was brought to life as much by people as buildings. These devotees lived and breathed his work acting as advocates for all things Palladian, but who were they and how did they come to change architecture? Were ‘Palladians’ more significant than the buildings? What makes someone Palladian?
Olivia Horsfall Turner, Curator V&A + RIBA Architecture Partnership, chairs a discussion exploring the ‘Children of Palladio’ with curator & Director of the Palladio Museum, Vicenza Guido Beltramini, RIBA Chief Curator and H.J. Heinz Curator of Drawings Charles Hind and architect Robert Adam.
