EAHN Business Meeting, Haifa 2014 – Final Program

Annual Business Meeting 2014, 27 February – 2 March 2014

Hosted by the Architectural Heritage Research Center (AHRC) in the Faculty of Architecture and Urban Planning, Technion, Haifa, and venues of participating NGOs. This meeting will be an opportunity for architecture historians to meet with local communities and decision makers and will make historical research accessible to a wider audience.

All members welcome! If you would like to attend, please contact the EAHN Office at office@eahn.org before January 10th, 2014

HISTORY IN CONFLICT
The meeting will include a symposium centered around the architectural historiography of cities in conflict. How do situations of sociopolitical conflict affect the way in which we conduct research in architectural history? How does the temporality of spatial conditions influence our historiographical methodologies? What is the role of architectural history in a context of conflict in the contemporary disciplinary discourse? This discussion will move beyond the ‘ivory tower’ of academia toward the city and its communities, working with NGO’s and scholars of Arab cities under Israeli rule.
THE CITY OF HAIFA
The emphasis of the meeting will be on the city of Haifa as a heterogeneous city challenged by its past. Its short history as a mixed city, mainly under the British Mandate (as opposed to the current condition of majority and minority) demonstrated a supranational horizon. During this period, Haifa operated as a gate of the British Empire to the Middle East and as a crossroads of development projects such as the seaport, the railroads and the oil industry. Ever since, the city is shared by members of different communities- Israeli Jews, Palestinian Arabs, Christians, Muslims, and others- who are consistently entangled in the overarching dynamics of the Arab-Israeli conflict. Today, with a Jewish majority and calm yet unbalanced co-existence, Haifa presents an opportunity to discuss architectural history in conflict, and its role in challenging the political boundaries of a mixed city and the civic responsibility toward its citizens. We hope that the academic meetings will encourage joint research that can challenge our understanding of urban citizenship. We aim to develop a discussion around the writingof architectural history and reach a condition in which history urges us to investigate questions of change and heterogeneity.
