Conference: Les années 1968 et la formation des architectes. Perspectives Internationales. Paris, 15-16 May 2018

Cité de l’architecture / ENSA Paris-Malaquais

In France, in the field of architectural education, May ’68 is a moment of suspension but it is inscribed in a wider perspective both from the temporal point of view (from the post-war period to the 1970s) and geographical. International confrontations abound: architects travel, books and ideas circulate and the teaching of architecture is widely debated. The congress of the Union Internationale des Architectes in 1965 in Paris is devoted to the training of the architect.
This colloquium discusses the forms taken by architecture pedagogies outside France in the 1960s and 1970s, when various factors contribute to legitimizing paradigm shifts in architectural theory. While the contents open widely to human sciences as well as to mathematical and computer experiments, constructive alternatives emerge, notably on themes such as ecology, the environment or the place of the user.
Next to the exhibition “May 68. Architecture too!”, through thematic contributions, this international colloquium will map at international level a series of pedagogical experiments, and evaluate to what extent they have made architects ready to embrace the diversity of architectural professions or, conversely, to take on more differentiated cultural and political positions.
