The University of Innsbruck invites to apply for the position of a University Professor of Architectural History at the Department of Architectural Theory and Building History, Faculty of Architecture. This position is in accordance with § 99 (1) of the Austrian Universities Act (Universitätsgesetz – UG) and will be based on a civil-law employment contract with the University on the basis of the Salaried Employees Act (Angestelltengesetz). The appointment is limited to three years and comprises full-time employment (100%). Subject to a positive evaluation pursuant to § 14 (7) UG and depending on institutional possibilities, a follow-up professorship according to § 98 UG is intended, for which the holder of this position may apply.
Responsibilities
Representing the field of Architectural History in research and teaching. The professorship understands architectural history as a history of ideas and critically examines its historical contexts. From a global perspective, it explores the relevance of history for contemporary issues and establishes connections between fundamental architectural-historical research, building research, architectural practice, and heritage conservation.
The professorship is expected to strengthen the Faculty’s visibility within disciplinary discourse through the establishment and maintenance of national and international research and project collaborations. Furthermore, the position is intended to advance and internationally position the field of Architectural History both intellectually and strategically. A strong publication record, the acquisition of third-party funding, and active participation in the University of Innsbruck’s interdisciplinary research priorities and the Faculty’s research agenda are expected.
The successful candidate is also expected to communicate architectural-historical knowledge to broader audiences and contribute to the dissemination of research through curatorial practice, exhibitions, workshops, and media engagement.
Teaching responsibilities include courses at the Bachelor’s, Master’s, and Doctoral levels in Architecture, including the supervision of theses and dissertations. Close collaboration with the departments of the Faculty of Architecture and the University of Innsbruck’s research centers is expected. Active participation in academic self-governance is an integral part of this professorship.
Employment requirements include
a) a PhD-level university degree and qualification in Architectural History or a closely related field;
b) a relevant habilitation or an equivalent qualification;
c) publications in leading international peer-reviewed academic journals;
d) evidence of involvement in international research; e) pronounced teaching skills and experience in independently delivering university-level courses;
f) experience in the acquisition and management of competitive third-party funding;
g) management and leadership skills;
h) excellent command of German and English.
