VI International Conference Cultura y Ciudad “HEALTH CITY ARCHITECTURE Bodies, Hygiene, and Practices of Care”

2-4 June 2027

Conference website: https://www.granadacongresos.com/culturayciudad

The International Conference ‘Cultura y Ciudad’ [Culture and City], initiated in 2015, will celebrate its 6 th edition in 2027 under the theme Health, City, Architecture. The conference calls for contributions on architectural history, urban history, landscape studies, cultural studies, and related fields, presented either by scholars affiliated to universities and/or research institutions, as well as by independent scholars.

The call is structured into three themes:
1. Bodies: relationship of bodies with space and human inhabitation as a key issue in the history of architecture and the city, spanning the contemporary and modern periods as well as early modernity, medieval studies, and antiquity.
2. Hygiene: regulations, devices, furniture, spaces, infrastructures, and urban planning initiatives as preventive measures against the unhealthy and as tools for healing for a history of the architecture and urbanism of hygiene that extends to the present day.
3. Practices of Care: re-reading of the architecture of healthy environments from an expanded perspective, in which health is no longer defined merely in terms of disease prevention, but is understood as a sustained condition over time, intrinsically linked to ways of inhabiting, support networks, and the material configuration of the city.
4. Cultural representations: Addressing hygiene and health from their cultural representations, including studies of what considered “clean” or “healthy” as a social construct that varies according to era, geography, and even the perspective from which it is analysed.

Further details for all four themes are available in the conference website.
Conference abstracts will be presented either in Spanish or English, with a maximum extension of 500 words. Abstracts will be submitted through the conference online platform. All proposals will be subjected to peer-review. Only those considered of interest for the topics of the congress, and fulfilling the required quality standards, will be accepted. Their authors will be invited to present a full paper, following the style guide and complying with the established deadlines.
