Environment

Rennes 2 University is the most prominent centre for research and higher education in the fields of arts, humanities, languages, human and social sciences in the West of France. It gathers 24.000 students within 5 faculties: arts, humanities and communication, languages, human and social sciences, and physical and sport activities.
Research Team EA 1279 Histoire et critique des arts includes 21 Associate Professors and Professors and 35 PhD candidates. It activities follow four research axes:

1. Criticism and its objects: notions, boundaries, corpuses
2. Objects, sites and architectures: conceptions and cultural heritage
3. Political history of arts
4. Interactions: philosophy of art, music, text, image

During the five-year period 2017-2021, Axis 1 (« Criticism and its objects: notions, boundaries, corpuses ») conducts research projects on the practices, theories and history of criticism, focusing on the cultural and disciplinary transfers, on the interactions between different forms of criticism (art criticism, music criticism, architecture criticism, etc.), as well as the approach of social sciences to the notion of criticism. Since 1989, the structural collaboration with the Archives de la critique d’art contributes to make EA 1279 Histoire et critique des arts a leading research centre in the field of the history of art criticism.
 

Scientific Project

Within the frame of this scientific project, the unity EA 1279 Histoire et critique des arts, in partnership with the Archives de la critique d’art, has recently contributed to structure a field of research, the project Mapping Architectural Criticism (funded by the ANR, 2015-2017), and it has formed an international network of researchers http://mac.hypotheses.org on the history of criticism. Based at Rennes 2, it gathers researchers from Italy (Università di Bologna, Politecnico di Milano), China (Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University), Great Britain (AA School of Architecture), Croatia (University of Zagreb), Portugal (New University of Lisbon) and Spain (Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya).
Differentiating itself from both the history of architecture theories and the history of architecture publication, the project Mapping Architectural Criticism attempts to understand architecture criticism as an ensemble of practices, texts, actors, cultural transfers, networks, in the perspective of a cultural history. While it addresses the transfers towards architecture from other disciplines in the field of human and social sciences, it also investigates the relation of criticism with the public debate, the processes of heritage recognition, and other types of architecture writing.
In connection with this epistemological question and historical surveys, Mapping Architectural Criticism aims at producing tools and documentary resources.
Therefore, Mapping Architectural Criticism relates to a two-fold scientific goal, which the postdoctoral researcher is required to comply with: an “intellectual cartography” and a “material cartography” of architecture criticism.
 

Postdoctoral Project

The postdoctoral project will be part of the ongoing research orientations of the network Mapping Architectural Criticism. The candidate’s scientific project, covering a period which can range from the beginning of the 19^th century to the 21^st century, will comprise and international dimension and relate to the study of notional transfers, international circulations and cultural transfers, following a multi-disciplinary approach. This may include different study areas: Europe, North America, Latin America, Asia, according to the candidate’s own research experience.
In addition to carrying on an individual research project, a strong involvement in the collective activities and research projects is required.

1. The postdoctoral researcher will contribute to the epistemological questioning on the history of architecture criticism, initiated by the Mapping Architectural Criticism network, starting from his/her own research fields, to the study of its actors, notions, vectors, etc.
2. The contribution to the constitution of an online portal of scientific information and storage of data on the history of criticism, namely in relation with specialists of Digital Humanities.
3. He/she will organise one or more international meetings (study days, symposiums).
4. He/she is expected to participate actively in the organisation and coordination of the activities of the Mapping Architectural Criticism network (organisation of meetings, publication).

 

Required Profile

PhD Degree in Architectural History, Art History or Architecture (on a relevant subject) maximum 3 years of experience after dissertation defence[1]. An international experience in research is required (during or after Doctorate). Candidates must not have discussed the PhD dissertation in the hiring institution (Rennes 2 University) and not previously worked in the host research unit (EA 1279).
An architectural historian specialized in the history of architectural discourses, criticism and architectural theories. The candidate must have a clear affinity with the theme of this research project, clearly demonstrated by his/her publications and/or conference papers. Knowledge of French, good knowledge of English, both oral and written, are required. The ability to work independently but at the same time to be a strong team player. Sense of organization.

L’Université Rennes 2 est, dans l’Ouest de la France, le plus important centre de recherche et d’enseignement supérieur en arts, lettres, langues, sciences humaines et sociales. Elle réunit 24 000 étudiants au sein de 5 unités de formation et de recherche : en arts, lettres et communication, en langues, en sciences humaines et sociales et en activités physiques et sportives.
Unité de recherche d’accueil L’EA 1279 Histoire et critique des arts compte 21 enseignants-chercheurs et 35 doctorants. Son activité se décline en quatre axes :

1. La critique et ses objets : notions, frontières, corpus
2. Objets, sites et architectures : conceptions et patrimonialisation
3. Histoire politique des arts
4. Interactions : philosophie de l’art, musique, texte, image.

Au cours du quinquennal 2017-2021, l’Axe 1 (« La critique et ses objets : notions, frontières, corpus ») mène des projets de recherche sur les pratiques, les théories et l’histoire de la critique, en s’attachant aux transferts culturels et disciplinaires, aux interactions entre différentes formes de critique (critique d’art, musicale, architecturale…), ainsi qu’au regard porté par les sciences sociales sur la notion de critique. Depuis 1989, la collaboration structurelle avec les Archives de la critique d’art contribue à faire de l’EA 1279 Histoire et critique des arts un centre de recherche de premier plan dans le domaine de l’histoire de la critique d’art.
 

Contexte du projet scientifique

Dans la dynamique de ce projet scientifique, l’équipe EA 1279 Histoire et critique des arts en partenariat avec les Archives de la critique d’art, a récemment contribué à structurer un champ de recherche : le projet Mapping Architectural Criticism (financé par l’ANR, 2015 – 2017) et a formé un réseau international de chercheurs http://mac.hypotheses.org sur l’histoire de la critique. Basé à Rennes 2, il regroupe des chercheurs venant d’Italie (Università di Bologna, Politecnico di Milano), de Chine (Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University), de Grande-Bretagne (AA School of Architecture), de Croatie (University of Zagreb), du Portugal (New University of Lisbon) et d’Espagne (Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya).
Se démarquant tant de l’histoire des théories de l’architecture que de celle de la publication architecturale, le projet Mapping Architectural Criticism tente de saisir la critique architecturale entendue comme ensemble de pratiques, de textes et d’acteurs, de transferts culturels, de réseaux, dans la perspective d’une histoire culturelle. Tout en s’intéressant aux transferts des autres disciplines des sciences humaines et sociales vers l’architecture, il examine les relations de la critique au débat public, aux processus de patrimonialisation, aux autres types d’écrits sur l’architecture.
En relation avec cette réflexion épistémologique et des enquêtes historiques, Mapping Architectural Criticism vise à produire des instruments et des ressources documentaires.
Mapping Architectural Criticism répond ainsi à un double objectif scientifique, que le post-doctorant devra poursuivre : une « cartographie intellectuelle » et une « cartographie matérielle » de la critique architecturale.
 

Mission (projet scientifique)

Le projet post-doctoral s’inscrira dans les orientations de recherche ouvertes par le réseau Mapping Architectural Criticism. Le projet scientifique du candidat portant sur une période qui peut aller du début du 19e au 21e siècles comportera une dimension internationale et, dans une démarche pluridisciplinaire, sera sensible à l’étude des transferts notionnels, des circulations internationales et des transferts culturels. Il peut concerner diverses aires d’étude : Europe, Amérique du Nord, Amérique latine, Asie, selon l’expérience de recherche propre du candidat.
Au-delà du développement d’un projet de recherche individuel, il est demandé une forte implication dans les activités et le projet de recherche collectifs.

1. Le post-doctorant contribuera à la réflexion épistémologique sur l’histoire de la critique architecturale amorcée par le réseau Mapping Architectural Criticism, à partir de ses propres terrains de recherche, à l’étude de ses acteurs, notions, vecteurs, etc.
2. La contribution à la constitution d’un portail d’information scientifique et de stockage de données sur l’histoire de la critique, notamment en relation avec des spécialistes d’Humanités numériques.
3. Il/elle organisera une ou plusieurs rencontres internationales (journées d’étude, séminaires).
4. Il/elle est attendu une participation active à l’organisation et à la coordination des activités du Réseau Mapping (organisation de rencontres, publication).
5. Profil recherché

Docteur en Histoire de l’architecture, en Histoire de l’art ou en Architecture avec au maximum 3 ans d’expérience après l’obtention de son doctorat[3], disposant d’une expérience de recherche à l’international (durant ou après son doctorat), n’ayant pas soutenu sa thèse au sein de l’établissement de recrutement (Rennes 2) et n’ayant pas déjà travaillé dans l’unité de recherche d’accueil (EA 1279).
Les recherches et publications de cet historien de l’architecture s’inscriront dans le domaine de l’histoire de la critique, des discours architecturaux et de l’histoire des théories. Le candidat sera apte à développer un projet personnel ; des capacités d’organisation et le sens du travail collectif sont appréciées. Un bon niveau en anglais, écrit et oral, est requis.
