Im Jahr 2016 folgt das LAB den Wanderspuren eines Schreibtisches. Ein Möbelstück aus schwerem Kirschbaumholz mit Glasauflage, das sich von
Weimar nach Dessau, von Dessau nach Berlin und von dort über London nach New England in die USA bewegt. Die Bewegung folgt dem Exilanten
Walter Gropius. Und immer verändert sich alles: der Ort, das architektonische Umfeld, die räumlichen Proportionen und der soziale
Status. Das LAB verfolgt mit Recherchen die Wanderung und erarbeitet künstlerische sowie gestalterische Ideen zur Vermittlung objektbezogener Exilgeschichten.
Das Lab richtet sich international an young professionals aus Architektur, Design, Kunst sowie kuratorischer Praxis. Das Programm ist
in englischer Sprache und schließt mit einer gemeinsamen Ausstellung am Bauhaus in Dessau ab. Die Teilnahme ist kostenlos und allen Teilnehmern
werden von Mai bis August 2016 Arbeitsplätze am Bauhaus in Dessau gestellt.

Desk in exile – the transatlantic journey of Bauhaus furnishings

Bauhaus Lab 2016 follows the travel routes of Walter Gropius’ desk. Designed as part of a cohesive ensemble for the first Bauhaus
exhibition in 1923, then in use in the director’s room in the Bauhaus building in Dessau before being temporarily located in the Lawn Road
Flats in London. Today the original is found in Lincoln, Massachusetts (USA).
The Bauhaus Lab explores these transatlantic movements and in doing so makes the iconic desk itself a player in a constantly changing set of
locations and social environments. The Lab will yield artistic and curatorial ideas about the communication of object-based histories of exile.
The Lab is intended for international young professionals from the fields of architecture, design and curatorial practice. The programme
will be held in English and will end with a joint exhibition at the Bauhaus in Dessau. Participants will be provided with a workspace at the Bauhaus,
without paying tuition fees.
