Call for Papers: Architectures for a new liturgy. Actions on the religious heritage after Vatican II. Porto, 10-12 October 2019

VI International Conference on Contemporary Religious Architecture

At the end of the sixties, a process of renewal of the Catholic churches began, which sought to respond to the liturgical modifications implemented during the Second Vatican Council (1962-1965). Fifty years later, this process continues to be problematic in buildings with a high heritage or historical value.
The objective of this call for papers is to reflect on the footprint left by the renewal of the Catholic liturgy after the Second Vatican Council. Also, on the regulations issued by the different agencies responsible for their custody or on the relevance of contemporary artistic interventions in them.
In these actions have been frequent dichotomies that cause tensions between the new and the old, between what should be preserved and what the use demands, between tourist consumption and everyday events, between the provisional and the definitive, between the urban and the rural, etc.
The conference would like to be an appropriate occasion to revisit those architectures where an open and serene dialogue between commissioners, architects, users, artists and patrimonial leaders has generated high impact works — and exchange points of view on these issues.
More information and the full call for papers can be found on the conference website.
Those interested in participating in the Conference with a paper should send an abstract (300 words) and a brief curriculum vitae (150 words) to the Conference Secretariat (arquitecturareligiosa19@gmail.com) before 15 March 2019.
